Sulphur residents are asked to conserve water

SULPHUR, Louisiana (KPLC) – Sulphur residents are being asked to use water sparingly over the next few weeks.

This morning, the City of Sulphur enacted a mandatory water conservation order until further notice.

“We’re entering that time of summer when it’s extremely hot for about two weeks,” said Sulphur Mayor Mike Danahay. “This is one of those times.”

Danahay also says the conservation plan is a necessary preparation for the dry weather.

“Every year, especially at this time of year, it is very hot and our water systems have to release much more water. That is why we ask our citizens to conserve water when necessary or possible,” Danahay said.

Last year, the city went into emergency austerity due to drought, and since this summer was wetter than the last, the austerity is a precautionary measure.

“In drought years we actually have a water emergency, but last year during the drought this is far from it,” Danahay said.

They do not require you to refrain from drinking water or showering, but merely to limit certain activities.

“We ask them to be mindful of their water usage. That could be using their sprinklers, washing vehicles, and other things they can do without during this time,” Danahay said.

Since there are no water meters in Sulphur, this conservation must be done as a community effort to prevent further problems for residents.

The city asks its residents to follow the following guidelines:

Regulation No. 520 IS explains the irrigation of courtyards and gardens as part of mandatory water saving.

• Owners and residents of odd-numbered homes and businesses may only water their lawns and gardens on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays between midnight and 2 p.m.

• Owners and residents of even-numbered homes and businesses are permitted to water their lawns and gardens on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays between midnight and 2 p.m.

• Owners and residents of residential homes and businesses without a street address may only water their lawns and gardens on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays between midnight and 2 p.m.

As soon as the protective measures are lifted, residents will be notified.
