It didn’t take long for the Saline boys water polo team to surpass the Hornets’ three wins in 2023.

The Hornets opened the season with a 4-0 win at the Grand Haven Invite and have already surpassed last season’s win total with an overall record of 3-19-2.

Saline started the season on Friday night with a 12-6 win over host Grand Haven.

They then scored three more wins on Saturday, beating Mason 11-7, beating West Ottawa 20-13 in the offensive shootout and ending the day with a 13-8 win over Lake Orion.

Veteran co-captain Jonah Bentley had a great weekend, scoring 26 goals and providing seven assists in the four wins.

AJ Hayes, the Hornets’ other captain, also had a great weekend with 13 goals, 13 steals and 11 assists.

Saline hosted Ann Arbor Huron in the opening game of the Fourth Eastern District on Wednesday night and lost to the River Rats 18-8.

A slow start was the end for the Hornets: Huron took a 5-1 lead after the first day of play and took control at halftime with an 11-3 lead.

Bentley had another big game with three goals and two assists.

Carson Ratasczak, Sean Spooner, Ellis Wensuc, Carson Wood and Jacob Clauser each scored a goal, while Spooner and Jansma each had an assist.

The Hornets will participate in the Ann Arbor Skyline Tournament this weekend.
