Pennsylvania DEP: Tests of water in Edenville yielded mixed results, but water system still issued a “do not drink” warning

August 23, 2024 – Numerous inquiries and complaints about what exactly is coming out of the taps of Edenville Water Association customers seem to offer some news, though no final conclusion yet.

News Talk 1037FM has learned the exact reasons for the water usage restriction for users of the Edenville Water system, but the condition of the system remains unclear. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has been working with Edenville Water to determine the exact cause of the issues surrounding the system. Currently, the system is no longer using water from a spring, but it appears that precautions are still being taken as the investigation is ongoing.

News Talk 1037FM spoke with the office of State Rep. Rich Irvin, whose district includes the Edenville Water Association headquarters. Preliminary information from the DEP through Rep. Irvin’s office is below.

“On August 8, Edenville received an odor complaint from a resident and after investigation, the resident noticed a shimmer on his raw water storage tank. Since on-site personnel described it as a “diesel smell,” the system collected VOC samples from each of the four sources. These samples returned no evidence of regulated contaminants and had three “hits” for unregulated disinfection byproducts that, to the best of our knowledge, would not cause the shimmer on the water. A petroleum scan also returned no evidence. SOC samples were collected by the system on August 16, but results are not yet available. Bureau of Safe Drinking Water personnel were on-site on August 13 and noticed the shimmer. It was opaque instead of a rainbow that is normally associated with diesel.

Eyer Spring is the spring that the water system suspects of being contaminated. They have suspended use of that spring and due to the loss of that spring, the system issued a water restriction order on August 18th. They also recommended that customers not consume the water – this was not an order required by the DEP, but one issued by the system.

There was a public meeting this week and the president of the Edenville Water System said the public has been receptive to Edenville’s efforts. The water system is providing cases of water upon request.

DEP Emergency Response and Environmental Clean-up has no records of environmental contamination or releases in the Eyer Spring area.”
