Messi’s nightmare at the 2014 World Cup could return at Inter Miami

Former German star Mario Götze has expressed interest in a possible move to Inter Miami to work with Lionel Messi. The MLS team has become famous worldwide, especially after the arrival of the Argentine. Götze, who scored the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final against Argentina, currently plays in the Bundesliga for Eintracht Frankfurt. However, the 32-year-old revealed that a move to the MLS is still possible. He currently has two years left on his contract with Frankfurt.

Götze recently spoke about an earlier approach from Inter Miami in 2020. At that time, his contract with Borussia Dortmund had expired. Therefore, after a successful career in European football, the 28-year-old was reviewing his options. This included playing for top clubs such as Bayern and PSV. Götze confirmed to Transfermarkt that there had indeed been talks with the Herons. “I was in contact with the guys from Inter Miami. We talked about it at the time and it was a possibility,” he said.

Although a move to the United States was tempting, he decided to stay in Europe, continuing his career in Eindhoven before returning to the Bundesliga with Frankfurt. However, the possibility of playing in the MLS remained in his mind, especially with the league’s growing profile and the upcoming 2026 World Cup in North America.

Future in the MLS?

At 32, Götze still has time to look outside of Europe and a move to MLS seems a natural progression for a player of his stature. Inter Miami, co-owned by David Beckham, has become one of the most prominent teams in MLS, especially after signing global stars such as Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. Götze, who has often visited the US with his family, expressed his admiration for the country and hinted that he might consider a move to MLS in the future.

“I like the USA a lot. We often travel there with the family… It’s very interesting, especially with the 2026 World Cup in mind. That’s why it’s on my mind,” said Götze. However, he stressed that his current focus remains on his commitments at Eintracht Frankfurt.

The German star also commented on the rapid growth of the MLS and the impact of the arrival of Lionel Messi. “I’m paying attention to the MLS now… You have all these superstars there, for example (Lionel) Messi and (Inter Miami co-owner David) Beckham in Miami, who are creating this media hype around the MLS. I think that’s a good development,” Götze noted.

The midfielder did not hold back in his praise for the Argentine, whom he described as the best player in the world. “He is the best player in the world. He was good for the MLS and his club. And I think it was a good move for him too. I think it’s a win-win situation for everyone involved,” said Götze, emphasizing the mutual benefits of Messi’s move to the MLS.

What could Götze bring to Messi and Miami?

Since its inception, Inter Miami has sought to break the mold of traditional MLS clubs by signing high-profile players. Even before Messi’s arrival, the club was able to attract stars such as Gonzalo Higuain and Blaise Matuidi, who were part of the team’s very first squad in 2020. Under Beckham’s leadership and a clear strategy of signing big names, Inter Miami has quickly become a global brand.

The club’s ambitions to sign superstars are perfectly aligned with the potential signing of Götze should he decide to move in the near future. With his experience, skill and international recognition, Götze would fit perfectly with the club’s philosophy and contribute to its growing legacy.
