The $5 footlong may be a thing of the past, but Subway has a new entry for Fast food battle for cheap meals like it has problems with sales.

The sandwich chain announced Friday that starting next week, 12-inch sandwiches will be available for $6.99. The discount is valid from August 26 through September 8.

To take advantage of the offer, customers must enter the promo code “699FL” either in the Subway app or on Subway.com. The code is available for both menu items and customer creations, the chain said.

“Today, restaurant choices are more varied than ever, and all too often that means compromising on quality, variety or taste to find an affordable meal,” said Doug Fry, president of Subway North America, in a press release. “This new offering means our guests can get the sandwiches they crave at a great value.”

Subway has more than 35,000 stores in over 100 countries, but has closed hundreds of locations in the past year. The company is also plagued by its former “$5 footlong” offer, which many customers still expect when they come in to buy a sandwich.

The chain’s announcement on Friday is just the latest step in the increasingly competitive Fast food value Food wars. McDonald’s has been offering its $5 menu every summer for almost a year, and Starbucks (SBUX) surprised customers with his own value deal because the company is also struggling with declining sales.

Subway already offers cheap snacks for under $5, trying to attract customers with cheaper options.
