More teenagers, including a 12-year-old girl, charged with machete attacks in Winnipeg

A 14-year-old boy is accused of a machete attack in Winnipeg earlier this month that left a 15-year-old boy with life-changing injuries. Another crime was an attack a few days earlier that left an 80-year-old man with serious injuries.

A 12-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy were also charged in connection with the attack on the older man. The boy was already in custody for the attack on the other 15-year-old, Winnipeg police said in a news release Friday.

On August 4, officers were called to Pritchard Avenue near Powers Street at around 9:45 p.m., where the man had been attacked with a machete. He had serious injuries to his upper body and was taken to hospital, where his condition has since stabilized.

According to police, the 14- and 15-year-old boys and the girl were drunk and armed with machetes and an axe.

The group first confronted some people in front of a residential building. The people ran inside without being injured.

The youths then turned their attention to the 80-year-old man who was smoking outside when he was randomly attacked.

The girl was arrested and charged first while police continued to search for the two teenagers.

On Aug. 7 at around 10 p.m., the 14-year-old spray-painted graffiti on a garage door in the Tyndall Park area, police said. He and the other teen then made their way to Selkirk Avenue near Aikins Street at around 11 p.m., where they brutally attacked the 15-year-old, according to police.

The boy was knocked to the ground and then kicked, punched and struck multiple times with a machete. He was taken to hospital in critical condition. His family previously told CBC News that he underwent 20 hours of surgery and was now in stable condition.

The boy suffered two broken arms with cuts down to the bone, a fractured skull and cuts to his face and back, and at least one severed finger had to be sewn back on, the family said.

The 15-year-old defendant was arrested a short time after the attack, one street away, on Flora Avenue, but the 14-year-old remained at large.

On August 15, he sent threatening messages to a social services office, which police say resulted in a curfew and calls to the police. The 14-year-old was found on Kairistine Lane, off Albina Way in the Tyndall Park area, and taken into custody.

He is accused of the machete attacks as well as the graffiti and threats against the social services department. He is accused of assault, possession of weapons, robbery, threats and five counts of failure to comply with a previous judgment.

The 15-year-old, who was still in custody following the attack on the teenager on August 7, was also charged in connection with the incident involving the older man.

He is also accused of failing to comply with a previous ruling in four cases.
