What Hideki Matsuyama’s victory at BMW means for his future at the FedEx Cup

Hideki Matsuyama shot an impressive 5-under-par 67 at the BMW Championship on Thursday, but is no longer in contention.

His 67-stroke shot left him tied for second place and in contention for his second FedEx Cup playoff event after winning the FedEx St. Jude Championship last week.

The bronze medalist at the Paris Olympics withdrew on Friday due to a lower back injury, which meant Collin Morikawa had to play the second 18 holes alone.

He entered this week’s competition as number 3 in the FedEx Cup overall standings.

“I was healthy. I don’t know if that had anything to do with the results,” Matsuyama said Saturday, Aug. 17, at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

Less than a week later, the former Masters winner had to cancel his participation in a tournament.

Did the weather-related delay on Thursday night cause him any problems? Matsuyama has struggled with back injuries before, so that period may have caused something as his body didn’t stay loose.

How does Hideki Matsuyama’s WD affect his position in the FedEx Cup?

Due to his withdrawal, Matsuyama receives zero FedEx Cup points for this week.

Matsuyama’s future in the playoffs is secure because he is so high in the rankings. If he can play next week, he has a spot in the Tour Championship field. Whether the 10-time PGA Tour winner will remain No. 3 is still uncertain.

His elimination from this event could help someone earn enough points to get into the top 30. Everyone moves up one spot on the leaderboard, which could mean someone gets lucky despite their unfortunate circumstances.

If he can’t play next week in Atlanta, the PGA Tour will not include him in the field. Instead, Matsuyama will be ranked 30th in the FedEx Cup rankings and 29 players will compete.

This news could also spell trouble for the Presidents Cup International team. Matsuyama is the best player in their rankings and his loss would be brutal for Mike Weir and his team.

Hopefully the winner of the 2024 Genesis Invitational will be able to compete in the playoff finals in Atlanta and everything will go well for the rest of the year.
