Vigil in honor of Natrona girl postponed until tonight

A public vigil in honor of Roxanne Alexis Bonnoni has been postponed until this evening.

The vigil is scheduled for 9 p.m. on the lawn along North Canal Street in Harrison’s Natrona neighborhood.

Bonnoni, 11, was killed while crossing the street near her home on Tuesday evening.

Bonnoni was hard of hearing and was supposed to begin her studies at the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf.

An as yet unidentified driver of a Jeep Patriot hit Bonnoni on Tuesday around 7:30 p.m. and was taken into custody by police.

Natrona resident Denise Parkin confirmed the new date for the vigil.

The field is a popular playground for neighborhood children.

A growing memorial at the next intersection with Kuntz Street is strewn with flowers, condolences and stuffed animals.

“This is a very terrible tragedy and our deepest feelings go out to her family. I am at a loss for words. I am still in shock,” Parkin said.

Parkin said the family is organizing the vigil, but details are still limited.

“This is my first vigil and I’ve never done anything like this before,” Parkin said. “It’s very emotional for the family.”

Everyone is cordially invited to take part in the vigil; people from other communities are also expected.

Parking is prohibited along North Canal Street.

Participants are asked to park near Natrona Park and walk to the vigil.

“It’s very important that we all come together and support this family as a community. We need to be there for the family,” Parkin said.
