How RB Alexander Mattison has helped the Las Vegas Raiders so far

The Las Vegas Raiders have a large running back capacity consisting of players of all ages and experience levels.

When you have a lot of depth, it’s important to know your role. With Zamir White taking the lead as starting back this season, it’s important for fans to take note of what his replacement, Raider running back Alexander Mattison, who is in his first year, has to offer.

“He (Mattison) is a pro among pros,” Raiders coach Antonio Pierce told the media on Wednesday. “He’s been in this system — I think that’s the best thing about it. The language he’s familiar with, the concepts and the scheme of how to play and how to play the wide zone, it’s really been a big help to Zamir (White) and Ameer (Abdullah) and the other gentlemen who have been in other systems. But he’s been Steady Eddy. You just have to watch him — maybe it’s not exactly spectacular, but he’s consistent, he checks all the boxes of his lineup and assignments. He’s reliable; you can trust him on third down in terms of protection. He’s been pretty good out of the backfield, too.”

Mattison joined the Raiders after spending his first five NFL seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. The veteran peaked in Minnesota toward the end of his career. Mattison became the team’s full-time starter in his final season with the club before unfortunately suffering an injury in the Vikings’ 14th game against the Raiders that limited him for Minnesota’s final three games of the season.

Mattison rushed for 700 yards and had 192 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns last season. Overall, he had 2,370 rushing yards, 11 rushing touchdowns, 718 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns in 75 games with Minnesota.

The sixth-year veteran played in the Raiders’ first preseason game against his former team, rushing for 15 yards on three runs.

We’ll see if Mattison will be more involved in the offense on Saturday when the Raiders host the Dallas Cowboys for their second of three preseason games.
