Video showing Democratic US vice-candidate Tim Walz dancing has been altered

context

A video circulating on social media purports to show Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential candidate and Kamala Harris’ running mate, dancing with a hat and dollars in his belt. The video has been widely shared on TikTok (archive here) and X, formerly Twitter (archive here).

Remarkably, even the author of a post that had over 211,000 views at the time of writing expressed doubts about its authenticity.

The poster was unsure if the video was real or manipulated. (Source: X-Screenshot)

Our investigations have shown that the video has been altered and the dancer is not Tim Walz.

A closer look

If we pay attention to the face and hat, we notice unnatural distortions in the lines and flickering edges of the hat brim. This suggests that the video may have been digitally edited.

A reverse image search traced the video to a flea market in Alamo, Texas, a popular hangout where shoppers gather to dance on weekends, giving us another clue.

In the original video you can see that the dancer is not Tim Walz, but another man. (Source: YouTube/El Rueda, screenshot)

The person in the video is Alejandro Casas, also known as El Divo 956, who frequently shares dance videos on his Facebook account. Some of his performances are posted on TikTok under the hashtag #eldivo956.

Although Tim Walz is active on social media, he has never published such a video.

The verdict

The man dancing with dollar bills in the viral video is not Tim Walz, Kamala Harris’ running mate, but a dancer having fun at a flea market in Texas. The video has been digitally edited, with the original face replaced.

For this reason, we have marked this claim as fake.
