Crystal Palace have rejected Newcastle’s third offer for Marc Guehi of £55 million plus £5 million in additional fees.

The Magpies have tabled a bid that would have seen them shell out a total of £60 million if certain add-on fees were met, but the offer is still below Palace’s minimum valuation of £65 million.

Mail Sport revealed earlier this week that Newcastle were expected to come back with a third offer for England star Guehi after we revealed last week that Palace had rejected the Magpies’ second bid. The offer was said to be initially £48m plus add-ons that would take the deal to over £50m.

Sporting director Paul Mitchell is leading the negotiations for Newcastle and has informed Palace of the new offer.

Eddie Howe has made Guehi his preferred target in central defence ahead of the new season and is fully behind Newcastle’s bid to sign one of England’s Euro 2024 stars.

However, there is a consensus that the club need to sign a new centre-back this summer, with sources suggesting the Magpies could consider other options should Palace stick to their stance.

AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw has been a target for Newcastle, but he appears reluctant to leave the San Siro, especially with the club playing in the Champions League this year.

Guehi’s current contract has just under two years left to run, meaning he can begin negotiations for a free transfer from South London in January 2026.

Palace understandably want to avoid this scenario and are willing to offer their centre-back a new contract that would make him one of the highest-paid players in the club’s history.

Guehi’s future could become even more complicated as Fulham recently offered £20 million for Joachim Andersen, who forms Palace’s central defence alongside Guehi.

Palace have rejected Fulham’s initial offer, but it remains to be seen how a potential departure of Andersen will affect Guehi’s lengthy move to Newcastle.

Palace head coach Oliver Glasner will push for the signing of Wolfsburg centre-back Maxence Lacroix if Guehi leaves.

The two worked together in Wolfsburg and Glasner is very interested in a reunion.

Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah, who has been told he is free to leave Stamford Bridge, is also an option for Palace if Guehi leaves.
