The New York Yankees defeated the Cleveland Guardians 6-0 at Yankee Stadium on Thursday afternoon. With this win, the Yankees are now 75-53 on the season, while Cleveland’s loss drops to 73-54.

The game actually carried a lot of significance because New York holds a 1.5-game lead over the Baltimore Orioles in the American League East. In addition, they have the best record in the American League and are currently atop the American League playoffs.

With this victory, the Yankees pitchers made team history unlike anything seen in the last 80 years. Sarah Langs of MLB.com wrote on social media:

Today was the second time in franchise history that the Yankees allowed a hit to the first batter they faced and then not a single one for the rest of the game. In addition:

Gerrit Cole started and allowed a leadoff hit by Steven Kwan before mowing down the rest of the Guardians’ 6.0 scoreless innings. He struck out two players and went 5-2 on the year. His ERA is 3.72. Tim Hill, Luke Weaver and Michael Tonkin were the main players the rest of the game, allowing just one walk between them.

The Yankees will return to action on Friday night against the Colorado Rockies. First pitch at Yankee Stadium will be at 7:05 p.m. ET when Kyle Freeland (COL) throws to Carlos Rodon. Rodon has a 13-8 record and a 4.34 ERA this season.

Freeland is 3-5 with a 5.97 record. Colorado is 47-81 this season.
