Down Senior Football Club Championship: Kilcoo’s early statement of intent shows Mourne County rivals are still the team to beat

However, the trophy was not handed to them on a silver platter. Carryduff proved tough opponents in the league final, restricting Kilcoo to a one-point victory (1-11 to 0-13), but their consistency in the competition is seen as an indicator that they will step up a gear for the championship.

Familiar names have graced the line-up since the team’s dominance in Mourne County began, but of late a new group of players have come to the fore, having absorbed the drive and pride of their older colleagues.

The same players will be in charge for Saturday night’s encounter at Liatroim (7pm) with a Loughinisland side particularly keen to take the spotlight.

Callum Rogers, Jack Devlin, Chrissy Rooney, MacDarragh Hynes and Sean Og McCusker are among the players trying to maintain the standards that have been Kilcoo’s trademark for over a decade.

Although they are the newcomers to the team, together with Miceal Rooney, Paul Devlin, Ryan Johnston, Shealan Johnston and Ceilum Doherty they form the solid core of experience that has shaped the composition of the team for several years.

The dozen or so championship titles may be a priority for Kilcoo, but Loughinisland are likely to make life difficult for Karl Lacey’s team.

Jonny Flynn, Rory Mason and Declan McClements are capable players who can give their team momentum, although the injury-related absence of Oisin Savage will be sorely felt.

Flynn has impressed in Down colours of late and his pace and versatility could prove a key asset should Kilcoo turn up the pressure.

The championship will be a tough test for the manager. Lacey was voted Player of the Year in 2012 when he helped his hometown Donegal win the All-Ireland title under the management of Jim McGuinness and his aim is to continue Kilcoo’s winning streak.

Meanwhile, Carryduff will be looking to carry their form from the league into the championship when they face Glenn in Castlewellan on Saturday (4pm).

The talented Guinness duo of Daniel and James generally exert a considerable influence on the Carryduff side and their experience in Down colours should stand them in good stead on this occasion.

Longstone and Bredagh meet at Teconnaught on Sunday (2pm), while Bryansford take on Saul at Downpatrick (4.30pm) and Burren, who have a proud championship tradition, face Liatroim at Clonduff (7pm), also on Sunday.
