On Thursday (August 22), Meta, Instagram’s parent company, announced the launch of a feature that will allow users to express themselves more by playing music on their pages – just like Myspace did in the early 2000s.

According to Meta, the new feature will be introduced in collaboration with the pop star Sabrina Carpenterwhose catchy hit “Espresso” went viral all summer. Starting today, Carpenter’s official Instagram profile will feature a teaser of a never-before-heard song of hers called “Taste.” The teaser and Instagram collaboration arrive ahead of the release of her album Short n’ Sweet on Friday (August 23).

Instagram says the profile music feature is currently the only way for fans to hear Carpenter’s new song before the full release. According to screenshots shared by Instagram, the new profile music feature will feature a small widget added to a user’s profile that appears below the bio section. It includes a play/stop button and displays the name of the song followed by the artist’s name.

Currently, the ability to add a song and have it viewed by other Instagram users appears to only be available on the Instagram mobile app. Also, unlike Myspace, songs no longer appear to autoplay as of Thursday afternoon. Now, to add a song to their profile, a user must navigate to their profile on Instagram, tap “Edit Profile,” then scroll down and find the new “Music” option in the list. Tap to add and search for the artist or song you want.

Once a song is selected, Instagram will automatically suggest playing it as a 30-second clip of the chosen tune – similar to how it works when users add a song to an Instagram Reel or Instagram Story post. To change the duration or part of the selected song, a user slides the selector to another desired area.

Once selected, the user taps “Done” and the song will appear on their profile. To change or remove the song from their profile, the user goes back to “Edit Profile” or simply taps the music widget on their profile. From there, a menu will open allowing the user to remove the song.
