Charlotte Hornets release two players one day after NBA Draft as roster restructuring begins

Seth Curry’s time with his hometown team is over – at least for now.

The Charlotte Hornets released Curry on Friday before his contract is fully guaranteed, but the move does not mean that Curry, who was acquired along with Grant Williams and a 2027 first-round pick from Dallas in exchange for PJ Washington at the NBA trade deadline in February, is disappearing from the team’s future plans.

Curry was set to make $4 million in the 2024-24 season in the final season of his two-year deal with the Mavericks, which gave him an $8 million contract last summer. The Hornets are likely trying to squeeze as much salary space as possible before heading into an offseason where there are questions about whether they will re-sign unrestricted free agent Miles Bridges.

Curry appeared in eight games for the Hornets, averaging eight points, two rebounds and 1.8 assists, before suffering a season-ending ankle sprain hours after a game against his brother Steph Curry and Golden State, where their father, Dell Curry, was commentating on Bally Sports Southeast. He said he expects to make a full recovery and is confident he will be able to return to his usual training regimen in the summer.

Not only did the Hornets let go of Curry, they also let go of JT Thor. They declined the fourth-year option on his rookie contract, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Thor averaged 3.2 points and 2.1 rebounds in 165 games and was never really consistent on offense despite getting several opportunities to play a major role. His departure means the Hornets are without any players from their 2021-22 draft class, as James Bouknight, Kai Jones and Scottie Lewis are all long gone and have also been released.
