FSSAI demands removal of all information on types A1 and A2 from packaging

The use of A2 claims on milk fat products is considered misleading and not in accordance with the FSS Act 2006 and its regulations.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has clarified the marketing of milk and milk products such as ghee and butter as A1 and A2 types. Sellers must obtain a license number or registration certificate number from the FSSAI for these products to ensure compliance with food safety norms to protect the health of consumers. The FSSAI has directed all food businesses, including e-commerce FBOs, to remove all A1 and A2 claims from the packaging of milk and milk products. Use of A2 claims on milk fat products is considered misleading and not in accordance with the FSS Act 2006 and its rules. FBOs sell or market milk and milk products under A1 and A2 categories even with the license number and registration certificate number from the FSSAI.

The regulator stressed that the Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulations 2011 do not provide for or recognise any distinction between A1 and A2 milks. Food business operators are instructed to remove such claims from their products and e-commerce food business operators must immediately remove all claims relating to A1 and A2 proteins from their websites.

FBOs shall be permitted to use all pre-printed labels within six months from the date of this Policy. No further extension or extension shall be granted to an FBO.
