The Government has been urged to make this season the last in which Premier League matches are locked behind a paywall.

The Liberal Democrats have promised in their manifesto to reduce the cost of watching major football matches, arguing that at least ten Premier League games per season should be broadcast free of charge.

The party, which currently has 72 MPs in parliament, wants to lift the paywall to build on the success of the Olympics and get more people interested in sport.

Calum Miller, Liberal Democrat MP for Bicester and Woodstock, wrote to Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy asking her to meet with football industry representatives to discuss free broadcast options.

“This has to be the last Premier League season locked behind a paywall,” he wrote.

“Football remains the UK’s most popular sport, deeply rooted in our country’s culture and traditions and attracting millions of passionate fans and players.

“But during the cost of living crisis, ticket prices for matches have continued to skyrocket and for many fans it is now no longer possible to see the team they support.

“I urge you to start talks with the Premier League to tear down the paywall and give football back to the country.”

He added: “Perhaps through your intervention you can persuade the Premier League and its affiliated television networks to give us all a live Premier League match as a Christmas present.”

“It’s time for young boys and girls and their mums, dads and grandparents to watch Cole Palmer’s penalties, Saka’s stunning footwork and Pep Guardiola’s record-breaking goals.

“I hope you can make this possible.”

A Department for Culture, Media and Sport spokesman said: “The Government has no plans to review the regime for listed events.”
