A Scottish law student has died while on holiday in Ibiza after reportedly falling from a sixth-floor balcony of a hotel.

19-year-old Emma Ramsay is said to have died in the early hours of Tuesday morning after a fall in a beach hotel in the holiday resort of San Antonio in the northwest of the Spanish island.

The Spanish Guardia Civil said the death was being treated as an accident.

The University of Strathclyde student had posted pictures showing her enjoying her holiday with friends in the hours immediately before her death.

In a social media post, her mother Barbara described her as “my best friend in the whole world.”

She wrote: “I will miss you more than words can ever express. Rest in peace my sweet angel and sleep tight, mommy loves you so much.”

A spokesman for the University of Strathclyde, where Ramsay was starting her third year of law, said: “Emma was a much loved member of our student community and we are shocked and saddened by her death.

“Everyone at the university extends our deepest condolences to Emma’s family and everyone affected by this terrible incident.”

She was a former pupil of St. John Ogilvie High School in Hamilton, where she was head girl.

Headteacher Lorna Lawson said: “Emma was an incredibly kind, hardworking, bright and talented student who contributed so much to our school community. Our thoughts and prayers are with Emma’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. Emma will be missed and will forever hold a special place in our school.”

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are supporting the family of a British woman who died in Spain and are in contact with local authorities.”
