As the offseason winds down and the Flyers’ rookie camp approaches, the team is working to create more salary cap space by attempting to move Ryan Johansen out of the game. The situation surrounding Johansen has been shrouded in mystery since he was acquired from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Sean Walker along with a first-round pick. While the Flyers stated that he would never play for the NHL Flyers, they were willing to send him to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms either to buy him out or to use him in a backup role. However, Johansen refused, immediately stating that he suddenly had a hip injury that prevented him from playing hockey. Ironically, Johansen had only played two days prior to the trade, skating at morning practice on the morning of the trade.

Going into this season, the situation seemed uncertain and the team might have to place him on the injured list for the final year of his contract. With the team estimated to be $830,000 over the salary cap for the upcoming season, they decided not to let Johansen sit out the remainder of his contract, especially since it was clear his injury status was questionable at best. So the Flyers have now decided to push the issue and claim Johansen violated his NHL contract. That debate will now continue, but if the Flyers presumably win that argument, they free up a potential $4 million in salary loss that they could use for the flexibility they need to stay within the salary cap without paying long-term injured list penalties. While it is unclear at this point what will happen, this is a position that the Flyers will most likely benefit from, and if they were able to get this far, they must have had the NHL’s permission to proceed.

In this episode of Gettin’ Gritty Wit It, Yariv and Vasili go over all the recent news and notes that led to their current salary cap situation and what will happen to their goaltending depth given the questions surrounding Kolosov’s move to the NHL. As the season approaches, we talk about what will happen and how the Flyers can hit the ground running with the rookie games against the New York Rangers, where Matvei Michkov will make his debut.
