#17 Emporia State Soccer loses friendly match in Kansas City

August 22, 2024 – The No. 17 Emporia State soccer team faced Kansas City in an exhibition game on Thursday night and the Hornets lost 2-0 to the Roos.

The Hornets struggled to get going early in the game as the Roos took possession. After two corner kicks in the fifth minute, the hosts recorded their first shot attempt in the seventh minute on a shot by Adriana Benassi that led to the first goal of the game. The first shot for Emporia State came in the 12th minute on a free kick by Haley Sparks. Sparks’ shot went over the crossbar about 30 yards from goal. Kansas City continued to pressure the Hornet defense throughout the first half, but Emporia State held firm and kept the score at 1-0 until halftime.

In the first half, Kansas City outscored the Hornets 8-1, with the Roos having two shots on goal.

Emporia State played aggressively after the break, pushing into Roos’ defensive half for the first ten minutes. Despite the pressure, the Hornets were unable to get a shot on the Kansas City goal. After the Hornets’ early pressure, Kansas City regained control of the game, getting six shots and two shots on goal in the first 30 minutes of the half, with the Hornets’ goalie making two saves. The Hornets’ second shot came in the 83rd minute, when an attempt by Abby Bachman on the left side of the penalty area it went past the goal to the right. Mackenzi Goen She added two more saves to her tally in the final seven minutes as Emporia State lost 2-0 to Kansas City on Thursday night.

Eighteen Hornets were in the game with Haley Sparks And Abby Bachman Everyone takes a recording. Mackenzi Goen made five saves in the game. Emporia State was outscored by the Roos 19-2 in shots on goal in the game.

Emporia State begins its regular season on Friday, September 6th with a trip to Mankato, Minnesota to face Minnesota State.
