Instagram revives a Myspace classic and allows users to add songs to their profiles

Instagram is taking a nostalgic trip back to the early 2000s with its latest feature: users can add a song to their profiles, reminiscent of the legendary Myspace era. This new feature allows users to express themselves musically and share their favorite songs with their followers.

Unlike its predecessor on Myspace, music on Instagram’s profiles doesn’t play automatically. Instead, visitors to a profile can choose to play or pause the selected track. The song appears in the bio section and stays there until the user removes or replaces it.

Adding a song is easy. Users can navigate to the Edit Profile page and select a track from Instagram’s extensive library of licensed music. The same selection is available for Reels and Posts. Users can then select a 30-second snippet of the song to display on their profile.

Instagram has partnered with pop star Sabrina Carpenter to launch the feature. Carpenter’s official profile will include a teaser of her unreleased song “Taste,” giving fans an exclusive preview ahead of her album’s release. “Instagram says the profile music feature is the only way to hear the song before its full release,” the announcement said.

To further celebrate Carpenter’s upcoming album, Short n’ Sweet, Instagram has integrated hidden features, including temporary note messages that turn light blue when keywords like “Sabrina” or the coffee cup emoji are used, as well as a Carpenter-themed chat theme.

This new feature provides users with a fun and engaging way to personalize their profiles and share their music tastes. It also gives artists a unique platform to promote their music and connect more deeply with their fans.
