Dexter Tennis with a quick start

The Dexter boys tennis team started the 2024 season with a bang this week, winning four of five matches to start the season.

The Dreadnaughts have high hopes for another D2 state tournament appearance and if the first week of the season is any sign of things to come, the Dreads will earn another state tournament berth.

Dexter opened the season with three wins at Adrian.

The Dreads defeated hosts Maples 8-0, Jackson Northwest 6-2 and Walled Lake Central 6-2.

Gabriel Heichel won three individual victories and Cayden Capelli won four.

The doubles teams Oliver Phan/Santiago Mendez, Drew Wetzel/Brady Stinnett, Carson Brandt/Noah Boyce and Drew Sheffield/Martino Pavesi each achieved a result of 3:0 that day.

Andrew Boydston and Steven Merz each picked up a win for the Dreads.

Dexter then split two games at Chelsea on Tuesday.

The Dreads beat Marshall 7-1 in one of their strongest matches against Chelsea in many years, losing to the Bulldogs 5-3 in a match that was decided by a three-set tiebreak.

Merz, Heichel and Capelli won singles matches against Marshall, while doubles victories went to Wetzel/Stinnett, Brandt/Boyce and Pavesi/Henry Hebbes.

Chelsea dominated the Dreadnaughts for many years, but on Tuesday it came down to the final.

Chelsea led Dexter 4-3 with one game remaining and the third set going to a tiebreaker. The Bulldogs took the win 10-6 and won the match 5-3 against Dexter.

Despite the loss to the Bulldogs, this could be a sign of great things to come for the Dreadnaughts.

Heichel and Capelli took singles victories, while Brandt and Boyce took three doubles victories for Dexter.
