Episode 74: Mayor Blangiardi on gun violence in West O’ahu

This week on the One O’ahu Podcast, Mayor Rick Blangiardi joins host Brandi Higa to discuss the recent gun violence in Wai’anae and how the city plans to increase its presence in the area, as well as what the Blangiardi administration’s priorities are for the next four years now that he has secured a second term.

Gun violence in Wai’anae

On August 16, Mayor Rick Blangiardi, Governor Josh Green, M.D., U.S. Rep. Jill Tokuda, State Reps. Cedric Gates and Darius Kila, Honolulu City Councilwoman Andria Tupola, and Honolulu Police Chief Joe Logan met for a joint press conference to discuss joint efforts to respond to the increasing deadly gun violence on O’ahu’s Leeward Coast. Two shootings occurred in the area last week, the most recent of which left two teenagers seriously injured.

“Our next steps are important first and foremost for the community and parents because we need that internal help,” said Mayor Blangiardi. He also urges parents to know where their children are and talk to them about how to keep these neighborhoods safe for everyone.

West O’ahu residents can expect increased police presence near Wai’anae Small Boat Harbor and in areas throughout the county in the coming weeks.

Priorities for the second term

A second term is certain for him. Mayor Blangiardi talks about his priorities for the next four years and what changes are necessary.

Mayor Blangiardi delivers the 2024 State of the City address at the Mission Memorial Auditorium in Honolulu.

“We will not deviate from our game plan. We will increase the pace,” Mayor Blangiardi replied.

He further explains that affordable housing, improving services in the Planning and Permitting Office, and keeping local families safe continue to be his areas of focus. Areas the mayor would like to see improvements in include increasing city staffing levels and expanding services at the Office of Economic Revitalization (OER). His vision for OER includes supporting local entrepreneurs and creating affordable living spaces for more local families on O’ahu.

UH football season opener

The University of Hawaii football team opens its 2024 season on August 24 against Delaware State. Mayor Blangiardi is a former coach and longtime season ticket holder.

“If they have a successful season, it’s good for everyone. I hope people come together with me and support the team,” said Mayor Blangiardi. “If that goes well, it affects everything.”

Kickoff between the Hornets and Rainbow Warriors on Saturday at the Clarence TC Ching Complex is scheduled for 6 p.m.
