Candace Cameron Bure recalls ’embarrassing’ ‘Full House’ episode about DJ’s weight

Candace Cameron Bure’s latest confession makes us say, “Oh my Lanta!”

The 48-year-old recalled an episode during the filming of the popular sitcom “Full House,” in which she played the role of DJ Tanner for eight seasons, that got under her skin.

On the August 11 episode of “Pod Meets World,” co-host Danielle Fishel of the ’90s sitcom “Life and Me” asked Candace if an episode had ever been written about her weight.

The star of “Ainsley McGregor Mysteries” shared that this was the case.

Candace talked about a Season 4 episode called “Shape Up,” which aired in 1990.

“I had this episode where Kimmy (Andrea Barber) and I went to a pool party and I didn’t want to put on a bathing suit,” she detailed. “So I went on a crash diet to lose weight in a week so I wouldn’t feel bad in a bathing suit. And then I passed out at the gym because I wasn’t eating and I wasn’t working out.”

The host of the Candace Cameron Bure Podcast added: “These are things that a lot of us struggle with, but you know, you play around with it on TV and sometimes you say, ‘Okay.'”

However, producers consulted with Candace and her parents about the content of the episode to ensure she felt comfortable filming.

“I thought, ‘Yeah, sure.’ But when you’re in the middle of it and you’re doing it, it feels a little weird,” Candace explained.

“We had wonderful producers who I really liked. They asked my parents first and then me,” she continued. “They asked, ‘How would you feel if you had an episode about your period, and I said, ‘No! No!’ And they said, ‘Okay,’ and they didn’t push it.”

In the following season, however, the former “Fuller House” actress lost a lot of weight, which the producers of the series wanted to highlight.

“I had lost 20 pounds from one season to the next,” Candace said. “I came in 20 pounds lighter and they thought that was so great and said, ‘Oh, why don’t we have you standing on an exercise bike in the opening credits to promote that.’ And looking back, I think that wasn’t such a bad thing. I really put in a lot of hard work and effort to lose 20 pounds.”

Growing up in the spotlight wasn’t always easy for Candace.

“I was always the girl with the chubby cheeks and a lot of people loved that,” she said. “And I can look back and say I was just a normal, average girl. And yet you meet people and they always say, ‘In reality, you’re so much thinner.’ And you just think, ‘Is that all people see? Do they just see my chubby cheeks?'”

The author of Kind Is the New Classy knows only too well that something can influence the way a young girl thinks.

“Of course, as a teenager, you’re insecure whether you’re on TV or not,” Candace stressed. “When you’re on TV, it gets worse, so those ages were a little more uncomfortable for me.”

If she had the chance to go back in time, she would give her younger self some good advice: “I just want to hug 15-year-old Candace and tell her, ‘It’s okay, don’t listen to anyone.'”

The actress noted that the hosts of “Pod Meets World,” including Rider Strong and Will Friedle, also appeared on camera at a young age, and admitted, “It’s weird growing up on camera and going through puberty on national television.”

“For better or for worse,” Candace admitted. “There are really wonderful things about being on a TV show and being successful and stuff like that. But it’s just bizarre when everyone sees your first pimple. When your boobs grow – whatever. It’s weird.”

And which season was the most difficult for the Chief Content Officer of the Great American Family?

“Probably 15 or 16, because that’s when girls really change. For me, it’s puberty. At 15 or 16, you’re always talking about your weight,” Candace said.

After filming “Full House” in 1995, the sitcom star developed an eating disorder after moving to Montreal to support her husband Valeri Bure’s hockey career.

Candace has spoken openly about how her relationship with food changed during this time of loneliness and isolation. After getting help, the former No One Would Tell actress developed healthier eating habits.

“For me, it’s been an ongoing journey,” Candace told Fox News Digital in 2020. “My relationship with food and my relationship with fitness… I’ve been very public about an eating disorder that I had in my early 20s. And it’s something that I still think about in terms of making good choices for myself to stay on the right path. And so I think the biggest key for me, which was like an aha moment, was just understanding and listening to my body and ultimately realizing how much better I feel when I make good choices.”

Now, 29 years after the end of “Full House,” the sitcom star has integrated a healthy fitness program into her daily routine.

“I love health and wellness,” Candace told Fox News in July. “Remember, I’m not a doctor. I’m not a nutritionist. I’m not a professional athlete or a trainer. I’m just a person who loves all of this and just loves soaking up information from people that I admire who are really intelligent in this field and know exactly what they’re talking about.”
