GRANITE QUARRY – The Salisbury boys soccer team remained undefeated with a 2-1 win at East Rowan on Wednesday.

The goals for the Hornets (3-0-1) were scored by David Austin and Joel Suarez in the first half.

Austin opened the scoring with a set piece shot from 21 yards midway through the first half.

Austin set up the Hornets’ second goal with another free kick, finding the ball to Suarez, a sophomore who scored his first career goal in his fifth game to take a 2-0 halftime lead.

The Hornets didn’t score in the second half and the Mustangs (1:2) made it exciting.

“East Rowan showed a lot of fighting spirit and continued to push forward and apply pressure as we worked through injuries and inconsistency,” said Salisbury coach Matt Parrish.

A mistake in the backcourt gave East freshman Riley Kunonga a completely clear shot, which he put in the net and halved Salisbury’s lead.

Salisbury managed to hold out for the final 18 minutes.

“We fell apart for several minutes and we just have to get better going forward, especially as we get into league play,” Parrish said. “But I’m proud of the team. They showed a lot of heart and grit, some of my favorite qualities.”
