Instagram adds music to profiles

Instagram adds music to profiles

It’s MySpace again in 2007, only Instagram now offers the ability to embed your current favorite song into your IG profile, allowing you to showcase your music taste to profile visitors.

Because music defines you, doesn’t it? Because the song you choose says so much about who you are as a person, doesn’t it?

This was the impetus for the development of MySpace’s “Songs in Profile” feature, which included auto-playing songs that came to life when people came across your MySpace presence.

IG’s version isn’t quite the same, as the song doesn’t autoplay in the app (thankfully), but it does offer a way to showcase your current track.

According to Instagram:

“We’re excited to announce that you can now add a song to your profile, giving you more ways to express yourself through music. Your profile song selection will remain on your profile until you swap the song.”

So cool, right? Now you can promote your favorite bands and artists and, ideally, show something about yourself with your music selection.

Instagram has actually been experimenting with this option for some time now; the first tests of songs on profiles were seen as early as 2022.

Facebook also tried the same thing, apparently with minimal response. But now it’s available on IG too, with younger users in particular likely being the addition’s main target audience.

So why start now?

Well, Instagram is trying to add more music elements overall, probably with an eye on a future in the US without TikTok. TikTok has become a key element for music promotion, so much so that TikTok is now considered essential for many music publishers. Some artists even change the names of their songs to match music trends.

But if TikTok is ultimately removed from the US, all music promotion will have to move elsewhere, and Instagram is trying to position itself as the best alternative in the social media space.

On this front, Instagram also added:Add Your Music Stickerswhich allows users to reply to a story with a title while also adding music in notes, displaying song lyrics in Reels, and other music elements.

This addition makes sense in the overall context and should appeal to younger viewers, especially those who are not yet old enough to remember the embarrassing days of editing MySpace profiles.

Maybe it will prove to be a valuable update, although you should also limit your judgment of people to their taste in music.
