Hudson Valley communities benefit from $30 million in federal grants for water systems

The Hudson Valley region will receive a significant boost in its efforts to improve water quality and infrastructure thanks to $30 million in grants from the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). These funds, part of a larger $265 million investment by the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation (EFC), will help 30 communities across the state address critical issues with their drinking water systems.

The targets of federal funding are leading service sectors

The $30 million in federal grants will be used specifically to inventory lead service lines in drinking water systems. This critical first step will allow communities to identify outdated and potentially dangerous infrastructure and plan for its replacement to ensure safer drinking water for citizens.

Financial support for local projects

The EFC’s approval also includes low-cost financing and grants to help local governments initiate and complete critical water and wastewater infrastructure projects. This financial support is critical to address health risks and environmental problems and modernize aging systems.

Key projects in the Hudson Valley

Several cities in the Hudson Valley will benefit from these funds:

  • City of Poughkeepsie: Receives $1.5 million for lead service line inventory and related upgrades.
  • City of Newburgh: $2 million for comprehensive water system improvements, including replacing lead pipes.
  • Village of New Paltz: $500,000 approved for water main replacement and system improvements.
  • Warwick Village: $750,000 allocated for new water treatment plants and lead line investigations.

Greater impact on regional water infrastructure

This funding will not only address lead contamination, but also support broader infrastructure improvements throughout the Hudson Valley. The investments are part of New York State’s broader commitment to improving water quality. In the current fiscal year alone, $2.2 billion in financial support was provided for local water projects.
