“When you make a television series that you want to continue, you have to make changes from a novel. I wanted to surprise the audience. I wanted to give the audience something that was a little bit different than what they expected from the book,” Halsall told Deadline. “I wanted to leave open what Jackie would do and what boy she would end up with,” Halsall said. “I’ve said many times that maybe Jackie won’t have a boy, she’ll end up alone. Maybe that’s still the case. It was a conscious decision to make that change, and I think it fit organically with the story.”

Halsall had a multi-season series in mind from the beginning. Rodriguez praised Jackie for making her own decision at the end of the first season.

“Jackie is going through a lot right now and she has really big dreams and goals, and so I really hope for Jackie that she doesn’t stray too far from the path and doesn’t get too distracted and just remembers what she really wants,” she told Deadline. “At the end of the day, no one is going to look out for you the way you would. So I think… it’s really important for people to see that she’s making up her own mind, and I applaud Jackie for that, to be honest.”
