US Olympic champion makes headlines with bizarre tongue exercises to relieve tension in the pelvic floor

Colleen Quigley, a middle-distance runner and 2016 Olympian, caused a stir on social media when she shared an unusual technique for relieving pelvic pain.

The 31-year-old steeplechase specialist shared on Instagram on Tuesday that sticking out her tongue before entering the course helps her stay in top form on race day.

In the footage posted on her profile, the world record holder is seen first removing her tank top before grabbing her tongue, pulling it out and moving it left, right and up and down, holding her tongue in each direction before changing the angle.

“Sometimes you drool over yourself—just try to relax,” Quigley says in the video, noting that the muscles in her jaw immediately relax after she performs her technique.

Technically, Quigley is correct when he says that tongue protrusion is used to relieve pelvic pain, since both the tongue and jaw are connected to the pelvis via the body’s myofascial connective tissue system.

Quigley credits Dr. Noah Moos, a Texas chiropractor who has previously treated U.S. Olympians, for teaching him the tongue twister trick.

However, Quigley admits that people have given her strange looks in the past while she was using this technique.

Fans who commented on Quigley’s Instagram post couldn’t believe what they had just seen online.

But they agreed with the athletics star.

“Is today April 1st? *checked* it’s August 19th,” one person wrote.

“Okay, but why am I sticking my tongue out while watching?” someone else remarked.

“Hahahaha this made me laugh so much. I love it. But I also know the research on therapy and tongue ties and how they cause tension in the body so it makes sense!” another person shared.

“This makes total sense – jaw/mouth relaxation is also a technique you learn for unmedicated childbirth… because jaw/pelvis! Bodies are so cool,” said one user.
