Jackson Merrill of the Padres is the new favorite for NL Rookie of the Year

At the end of July, Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Paul Skenes was the clear favorite to win the National League Rookie of the Year award at sportsbooks across the country. The odds were so overwhelming that one Las Vegas bookmaker stopped betting on the award altogether.

A month later, the odds to win NL Rookie of the Year have changed dramatically, and Skenes is no longer the favorite as he prepares to take the mound on Thursday against the Cincinnati Reds.

San Diego Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill has emerged as the general favorite this week. On Wednesday night, he overtook Skenes on ESPN BET to become the favorite for the award at -170 odds. Skenes is now at +120. On July 24, Skenes’ odds were just -5,000.

The Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas stopped betting on the price before the All-Star break because Skenes was such a clear favorite. But the Pirates have had 2-3 starts from Skenes since the break and are out of the playoff race.

Merrill was a 50-1 underdog at ESPN BET and BetMGM in June, but his consistent play and the Padres’ success have propelled him to the top of the rankings. Merrill has a .291 batting average with 18 home runs and 71 RBIs for the Padres, who are tied with the Arizona Diamondbacks atop the NL wild-card standings and four games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

Since the All-Star break, 58.2% of bets — and 61.8% of the money wagered — on ESPN BET have been on Merrill to win NL Rookie of the Year.

Baltimore Orioles left fielder Colton Cowser was a -650 favorite for American League Rookie of the Year on ESPN BET on Thursday.
