How high are the car theft numbers on Staten Island compared to last year? Statistics show it.

STATEN ISLAND, NY — Seven vehicles were reported stolen on Staten Island during the week of August 12-18, according to the NYPD.

According to the NYPD’s latest CompStat numbers, auto thefts reported in the borough through August 18 have decreased by 24% (223 versus 295) compared to the same period in 2023.

The database shows that between August 12 and 18, the last week for which statistics are available, six cars and one motorcycle were stolen on Staten Island.

Here is a look at these incidents:

– On August 13 at 9 a.m., a car theft was reported at South Railroad and Reid Avenue in Dongan Hills.

– On August 14 at 6 a.m., a car theft was reported at Oakdale and Wooddale Avenue in Dongan Hills.

– At 6am on August 15, a car theft was reported at the intersection of Lynhurst Avenue and Ditson Street in Rosebank.

– A few hours later, at 10 a.m., a motorcycle theft occurred on Ada Drive in Graniteville.

– On the same day, at 5 p.m., a car theft was reported at the corner of South Avenue and Spencer Street in Chelsea.

– Later that same evening, at 11 p.m., a car theft was reported at the corner of Jersey Street and Layton Avenue in New Brighton.

– On August 18 at 1 a.m. a car theft was reported at the intersection of Brook and Pike Streets in Tompkinsville.

The NYPD made a tactical shift late last summer and developed a complex, multi-state system for collecting and analyzing intelligence to specifically target car thefts and burglaries, Assistant Chief Joseph Gulotta, the NYPD’s district commander, said in an interview with Advance/SILive.com in December.
