(CBS) – A 14-year-old Michigan girl and her 17-year-old boyfriend have been charged as adults in the attempted murder of the girl’s mother, authorities said.

The Macomb County District Attorney’s Office says the 17-year-old boy entered his girlfriend’s mother’s Eastpointe home on July 24, 2024, and strangled her before being confronted and fleeing. Eastpointe police say an investigation revealed the victim’s 14-year-old daughter planned the murder with her boyfriend.

The girl is charged with incitement to murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree premeditated murder. If convicted, she faces life in prison.

The girl’s boyfriend is charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and assault with intent to murder. If convicted, he could spend the rest of his life in prison.

The 14-year-old was arraigned on August 14, bail was set at $1 million and he was remanded to the juvenile detention center. The 17-year-old was arraigned on August 12, bail was set at $2.5 million and he was remanded to the juvenile detention center. A judge ordered that the two defendants have no contact with the victim, witnesses or each other. They must also wear a steel GPS leash and are not allowed to access the internet.

Their names were not published.

“The alleged actions of these juveniles are not only illegal, but also incredibly dangerous. This level of criminal activity is unacceptable and we intend to punish it with the severity it deserves. That is why we want to charge these juveniles as adults – because when you commit adult crimes, you face adult consequences,” Macomb County District Attorney Peter J. Lucido said in a statement.

A probable cause hearing for both defendants will be held on August 27.
