Texas: Authorities arrest car thieves found fast asleep on a bag of marijuana

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (KWTX) – The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office says it has arrested two car thieves after one of them was found sleeping on a bag of marijuana.

David Rabago and Jesse Hinton are both charged with auto theft and possession of marijuana.

On August 14, authorities were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 6400 block of Wurzbach Road for a report of a stolen 2019 Ford Explorer.

Authorities say a maintenance worker, who was later found to have warrants for his arrest, told investigators that the suspects, later identified as Rabago and Hinton, were believed to be residents of the complex.

According to authorities, some officers went to the suspects’ apartment to speak with them, while others remained stationed at the apartment in case the suspects attempted to escape.

When officers arrived at the apartment, authorities said, Hinton attempted to flee, but was followed by a cloud of marijuana smoke and arrested.

Authorities said they entered the apartment and found Rabago fast asleep on a bag of marijuana.

Both Rabago and Hinton admitted to stealing the Ford Explorer after spending the night tugging on the doorknobs. One of the suspects also claimed he stole the vehicle to pay for a medical procedure, authorities said.

Authorities confirmed that the suspects stole the vehicle after reviewing surveillance footage of the incident and executing a search warrant where the vehicle key was found.

Rabago and Hinton were taken to the Bexar County Jail and arraigned on the charges listed above.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents to lock their vehicles and ensure valuables are either removed from the vehicle or out of sight.
