Woman dies in bicycle accident on Mackinac Island

I always thought Mackinac Island was the safest place to ride a bike in Michigan, but apparently a woman died in a horrific accident.

Cycling on Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island has been car-free since 1898 and has become one of Michigan’s most popular biking destinations.

Mackinac Island has over 70 miles of paved and natural trails, including State Highway M-185, which goes around the island. The drive around the island is 8.2 miles and takes about an hour if you don’t stop for a selfie. There are great views of Lake Huron, the Mackinac Bridge, and Native American cultural history, so good luck on the drive, which only takes an hour.

Visitors can ride around the island and through the town and easily explore the area by bike. There are no cars or trucks here. You can bring your own bike or rent one on site. There are also guided tours that you can take by bike.

Woman dies in bicycle accident on Mackinac Island

The only thing a cyclist sees on the roads of Mackinac Island are other cyclists, pedestrians and horse-drawn carriages. According to WOOD, a 77-year-old woman from Oakland County was riding her bike when she unfortunately collided with one of the horse-drawn carriages. The woman was seriously injured but did not die at the scene.

Several people were involved in the relief effort: hotel employees, community residents, tourists, the Mackinac Island Fire Department and the Michigan State Police. The woman, who was taken to a hospital in Petoskey, succumbed to her injuries.
