9-year-old boy dies after mother caused drunk driving accident on Long Island: police

BAY SHORE, NY — A 9-year-old Centerport boy died in a traffic crash after his mother was accused of driving the wrong way while under the influence of alcohol on the Southern State Parkway in Bay Shore Thursday morning, New York State Police said.

State police and Suffolk County sheriff’s officers were called to a crash on the parkway near Exit 42 eastbound, police said. The woman, who was driving a dark, late-model SUV, caused a four-vehicle crash that killed her son, police said.

Officers saw the woman standing next to her car and found her son in the back seat, buckled in, police reported. Officers and deputies performed CPR on the boy in an attempt to save his life, but he later succumbed to his injuries, police reported.

The mother and the occupants of the other three vehicles involved suffered injuries, but these were not life-threatening, police said.

The woman and the boy have not yet been identified by police.

The woman is 32 years old, Newsday reported. She was given a breathalyzer test, but state police have not released the results of the test or listed the charges she faces, Newsday reported.

State police thanked the New York State Department of Transportation and the Suffolk County Police Department for their assistance in controlling traffic. Brentwood Fire Department, Brentwood EMS and Exchange EMS transported the crash victims to nearby hospitals.

The collision remains under investigation and the State Police Department is asking anyone who witnessed the accident or has information to call 631-756-3300.
