Red Sox emphasize a “never give up” identity amid postseason offensive

The Red Sox have been a strange team this season, but there is no question how willing the team is to compete every night they step onto the baseball field.

Boston won the series against the Astros 4-1 against Houston at Minute Maid Park. With Wednesday’s win, the Red Sox are 3 1/2 games back in the race for the wild card in the American League.

The Red Sox were one of the least consistent teams after the MLB All-Star break, with shaky pitching a major factor. But the offense helped stabilize the pitching staff, which came through in key moments. It’s that identity that led Alex Speier of the Boston Globe to refer to Boston as “zombies,” because every time you think the team is finished, it rises from the dead.

“I like it,” Josh Winckowski told reporters, according to Speier. “Zombies are dangerous.”

Before this season, the Red Sox were not expected to come anywhere close to making the playoffs, but for the rest of the regular season, they need to win a game almost every night. Boston battled numerous injuries, but manager Alex Cora led the team and helped them maintain faith in the baseball season in October.

“We’re like a team of underdogs, even cockroaches,” Brennan Bernardino told reporters, according to The Boston Globe. “You just can’t kill us. We’re just going to keep fighting. That’s how I feel about our team.”

Bernardino added: “Zombies are probably better than cockroaches.”

Boston has a day off on Thursday before its weekend series against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Fenway Park.
