Swede Linnea Strom is still trying to get the attention of the Solheim Cup captain

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – The only European winner of the LPGA so far this season?

That would be the Swede Linnea Strom.

The 27-year-old Strom won the Shoprite LPGA Classic in early June and, along with Frenchwoman Celine Boutier, is the only European to have won on the tour since the Solheim Cup last year.

With the biennial team event now held in even-numbered years, the Solheim Cup will once again be held in Gainesville, Virginia, from September 12-15. And with the qualifying period shortened, it would make sense that Strom would at least be on the radar.

Only it doesn’t seem so.

“Not really,” Strom said Thursday at the AIG Women’s Open when asked if European captain – and fellow Swede – Suzann Pettersen had been in touch with her since Strom’s first LPGA triumph.

“Maybe a little bit surprised. There haven’t been any other European women winning on the LPGA this year, so maybe I expected it. But I know it’s a quick turnaround since Solheim was last year… I’m trying to focus on what I can do, and that’s play good golf.”

Aside from her win, Strom admittedly hasn’t performed as well as she would have liked. She has missed 11 of 18 cuts this year, hasn’t broken back into the top 10 and is ranked 107th in the world, making her the 18th best European – and the fifth best Swede.

Before turning pro, Strom had plenty of success with her team, helping Arizona State to the 2017 NCAA title. She also played in two Junior Ryder Cups and a Junior Solheim Cup, was part of two Vagliano Trophy-winning teams, and represented Sweden in two victorious appearances at the European Girls’ Team Championship.

On Thursday in St. Andrews, Strom started with 1 under 71.

“I just try to keep that in mind,” Strom added, “and if I have a good week, then maybe.”
