Bengaluru’s planned 250 m high Skydeck

Bengaluru: As part of a major improvement to the city’s infrastructure, the Karnataka government on Thursday approved Bengaluru Skydeck Project is to be built at a cost of Rs 500 crore. The deck, once completed, will provide a 360-degree view of the IT hub. The official cabinet note states that Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has identified three locations for the construction of the Skydeck: Hemmigepura (near Nice Road), Bengaluru University, Jnanabharati and Kommaghatta (near Nice Road).

Then in a meeting chaired by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on 17.07.2024, it was decided that the land in Hemmigepura (near Nice Road) is well connected to Tumkur, Kanakapura, Mysore and Hosur roads through Nice Road.

The statement also said that there will be less traffic congestion during the planned construction work as the building is located in a suburban area. “Also, one can see Bengaluru and the lush green Turahalli forest from here. Accordingly, it was finally decided in the meeting that the Hemmigepura (Nice Road Clover Leaf) site is suitable for the construction of the 250-metre-high skydeck,” it added.

Who will finance the project?

The meeting discussed whether the proposed project will be implemented under PPP model or by BBMP with its own funds. The participants opined that it is a prestige project and if it is fully funded by the government/corporation, it will become a matter of pride for the government.

They said it will be a tourist spot and revenue is expected from commercial activities. Accordingly, it was decided that the Skydeck will be fully funded by the Government/BBMP.

Further decision of the State Cabinet

Karnataka Cabinet has also decided to construct an underground tunnel from Hebbal to Silk Board Junction at an estimated cost of Rs 12,690 crore.

Apart from this, the state government will build 52 new Indira canteens in Bengaluru and open 592 Anganavaadis at an estimated cost of around Rs 50 crore.
