The ending of season 4 of “Evil” explained and how episode 14 provides further clues

The finale of Evil is here. Whether season 4, episode 14 is really the end of the supernatural series or not, some open questions have been answered for David, Kristen and Ben.

Despite knowing the show was unlikely to be picked up for Season 5, the fourth season of Evil stayed true to its mystery-of-the-week formula. AI was the series’ buzzword (of course), and creators Michelle and Robert King made statements about their position.

We began this final season with Kristen, David and Ben investigating a technology company, the Vatican’s secrecy continuing to cause problems for David, and Kristen’s personal issues deepening.

It felt like a show that wasn’t sure if this was its last trip around the sun (even though episode 14 is titled “Fear of the End”). The nasty finale stays true to that approach, wrapping things up nicely without closing the door on future stories. Warning, spoilers for episode 14.

The end of the evil finale explained

The evil finale ends in Rome. The Bouchards and David build a new life together. Ben is absent because he has decided to stay in his new job. The very last scene reveals the truth about Timothy.

Ben, David and Kristen in season 4 of Evil.

The series ends relatively happily: David and Kristen – together with their daughters – will continue to work as auditors in Italy after the church has withdrawn their financial resources.

Robert King told TV Insider: “They’re charming and there’s great chemistry between Mike (Colter) and Katja (Herbers). It was hard to imagine this scene where they all live in different worlds, so we wanted them together.”

He continued: “And maybe it’s a hope for us with Evil too, since Paramount+ said no. Maybe Roman TV in Italy will say we want more and they’ll take us to Rome where we’ll shoot.”

Although… this hopeful ending has a catch.

Here the script shows that there is still hope for renewal: we end with a little cliffhanger. A giggling Timothy says that he trusts Kristen enough to show her his true face.

His eyes glow and we see some non-human teeth in his mouth. The baptism definitely didn’t work and David is none the wiser as we fade to black.

Kristin

Kristen survived the season 4 finale of Evil after facing off against Leland, but Ben and David convinced her not to kill him, even though she clearly wanted to.

She decided to move to Rome with her family and David, and then learned the truth about Timothy. She decides not to tell David that she might have seen the real Antichrist, at least not yet. And it doesn’t look like The Sixty will stop pursuing her.

Of her decision to cover Timothy, King explained, “We also wanted this pretty image of the girls in these pretty school outfits by Dan Lawson for Rome and Katja in the prettiest dress ever, thinking, oh, this is the happy ending we want, and they’re going to kick off their heels and walk off into the sunset and then see, no, this kid is probably the Antichrist and Kristen is going to cover him.”

David

David was convinced that God wanted him to protect Kristen. He admitted that his work with The Entity took him off his path and showed him where his heart really lies. David also spoke out against discontinuing the review program and convinced the Vatican to resume it in Rome.

He cared for his friends until the end, and Robert King said, “We wanted him to continue to rise, like we saw with Leland, killing one demon after another and moving up in his satanic hierarchy; there was a kind of mirroring going on.”

Ben

After understanding the VR game and its effect on people’s brains, Ben decided to stay home instead of traveling to Rome with the othersHe felt secure in his job and financially well off.

Leland

Leland was thrown into a sack and put into the demon box Fenna has come along. A fight breaks out and this time the good guys win.

When he went to find Kristen, they decided that death was too great a punishment for him. He deserved it!

King added: “We wanted Leland not to be killed in a prosaic, pragmatic way, but to be defeated in a kind of magical way that fits with the symbolism of the show.”

Will Kristen and David get together in the Evil finale?

Although David confesses his love for Kristen to Ben, he does not give up his priesthood and they do not kiss.

But if you look closely, they are somehow still together.

Robert and Michelle King certainly recognized and understood the chemistry between them, but ultimately the decision was to stay true to David’s opinion. “His passion for making decisions and sticking to them is as important to him as sex with Kristen – especially when you can still have Kristen as a girlfriend,” Robert said.

“The temptation will always be there for both of them because you can’t just turn it off when there is so much heat between them.”

Is Timothy the Antichrist?

There is no clear answer to this. It remains up for debate, and even the makers of the show disagree. But it is certainly a possibility.

Timothy's baptism in evil.

“Michelle and I disagree, which is why the show can work either way, but I think that it’s the Antichrist, that Lexis, this story, was really her true satanic nature within her and that Kristen was chosen in part because she would be a good mother to protect this baby as it makes its way to manhood and a demonic Antichrist presence.

“For me, that’s the punch line at the end of the joke: We love Kristen, but is she also the mother of the living Antichrist? Did Leland get his way in the end? So it’s really good that Michelle and I disagreed, because then the audience can disagree too.”
