Can Uber Eats customers add snacks for themselves to their bill?

An Uber Eats driver caused controversy on TikTok when she joked that she would add a few items for herself while shopping for a customer.

In a video with over 770,000 views, TikToker Ashley (@xoxoashleylynn) puts a pre-made sandwich into a shopping cart. The text on the screen reads: “When you’re hungry on Uber Eats, add some snacks to the customer’s order.”

In the caption she writes: “A few snacks won’t hurt. Uber has my back.”

The video is a joke, but does this actually happen often?

In the comments, Ashley clarified that the video was “just a joke” and that she pays for her snacks separately. However, some viewers say her grocery shoppers actually added their own items to her bill.

A few snacks won’t hurt, Uber supports me. 😅

“When I used to order from InstaCart, I would see extra items on the receipt and be completely confused,” one said. A former shopper agreed, saying, “No, because when I used to order from Shipt, my Meijer never checked my prepaid orders, so I would just put things in my cart for fun and they never noticed.”

“My Insta-Cart shopper did this to my Krogers, I demanded a refund,” wrote another.

“This happened to me once by accident. I actually wanted to make two separate purchases. I was surprised that it worked. DD never said anything,” admitted a third shopper.

In the comments section, some buyers emphasized to confused customers that they did not have to pay the bill because they had paid for their order in advance.

“This works. My friend keeps adding things to orders. They never notice because Instacart refuses to give the customer a receipt,” one viewer explained. Ashley agreed, writing, “They don’t charge you anything extra. We keep the receipt. You pay for what you ordered.”

The workaround

But for hungry drivers looking to grab a snack, there may be a solution. A few clever viewers have explained how to do it without increasing the customer’s bill or doing anything illegal.

“The only time I do this is if there is a BoGo offer at the store, then I would keep the free credit :),” one person wrote.

“I go to Instacart and sometimes they offer bogo sodas and I always wonder if the customer knows because I want to keep the free sodas,” said another.
