Low-cost airlines boost foreign tourism to Valencia

Foreign tourism in Valencia is booming, largely due to the increase in low-cost airlines.

Recent data from Turespaña shows that 77% of international passengers arriving at Valencia Airport between January and July 2024 chose low-cost airlines, highlighting the central role of these airlines in the region’s tourism industry.

Valencia’s rise as a top destination for international travelers is closely linked to the expansion of low-cost airlines. Budget airlines such as Ryanair have become the preferred choice for many, offering affordable travel options that attract visitors from across Europe.

The 1.72 million foreign passengers who arrived in Valencia on low-cost flights in just seven months underline the significant influence of these airlines on the region.

This trend has only intensified since the pandemic and represents a notable change from 2019, when 70.2% of foreign arrivals chose low-cost airlines.

Busan is greening and growing

For traditional airlines, however, the share of foreign passengers fell slightly, from 534,000 in 2019 to 495,000 in 2024.

This change reflects a broader trend in the travel industry, where Affordability and accessibility are increasingly influencing decisions.

Valencia surpasses other regions in tourism growth

While the choice of airline is a determining factor, the overall growth of tourism in Valencia during the peak summer months is also notable. Among Spain’s six leading autonomous regions – Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Madrid, Andalusia, Canary Islands and Valencia – Valencia recorded the largest increase in foreign arrivals in July 2024.

The region recorded growth of 13.1% compared to July of the previous year, outperforming other popular destinations such as Madrid (10.5%), Andalusia (10.4%) and Catalonia (10.1%).

This impressive growth underlines Valencia’s increasing appeal as a destination, offering a mix of vibrant culture, beautiful beaches and rich history, all accessible through affordable travel options.

The boom in tourism not only benefits the local economy, but also strengthens Valencia’s position as a major player in the Spanish tourism industry.

The increasing dependence on low-cost airlines is likely to continue to shape the tourism landscape in Valencia.

As more travelers prefer budget-friendly options, the region can expect a steady influx of visitors, especially from Europe.
