Russian “logistics general” dies in front of his family

A retired senior Russian military commander has died in his Moscow home, Russian media reported on Wednesday, just months after he was shot by a taxi driver during an altercation in the capital.

Russian state news agency Tass reported, citing medical sources, that Dmitry Dreval, a retired major general who had served as deputy head of Russian military logistics, died of “acute heart failure” in Moscow on Tuesday.

The news agency reported that the retired major general felt “unwell” before an ambulance arrived at the scene of the accident, but he could not be resuscitated. The Moscow daily Moskovsky Komsomolets, reported that the 68-year-old had become ill in his apartment and his wife had called the emergency services.

“There are no physical injuries, the cause of death is natural, he died at home in the presence of his relatives,” an anonymous source told Russian broadcaster RBC.

Dreval was shot in the leg in May during an argument with a taxi driver, Russian and Ukrainian media reported at the time.

The former commander had been honored with awards by the Russian authorities, including the Order of Military Merit, which is awarded for exemplary service in Russia.

Since the outbreak of the all-out war in Ukraine, several other prominent former Russian commanders have died, although in many cases there is no indication that their deaths were related to the conflict.

In August 2023, the former commander of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine died in Moscow after a “protracted illness,” a Russian official said. Colonel General Gennady Shidko had briefly commanded Moscow’s armed forces in Ukraine and was also head of the country’s Eastern Military District.

He had led the Russian war effort in Ukraine for several months in 2022 before being replaced by General Sergei Surovikin, the “General of Armageddon,” in the fall of that year. By that time, Ukraine had launched a highly successful counteroffensive that had rolled back the Russian control that had been established in the first weeks of the full-scale invasion.

That same week, former general Gennady Lopyrev died in a penal colony in the central Russian region of Ryazan, where he was serving a 10-year sentence for bribery, a charge he had always denied. Lopyrev was reportedly in charge of construction and security arrangements for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s luxury Black Sea resort near the Krasnodar city of Sochi.

General Alexei Maslov, the former commander of the Russian ground forces and Moscow’s military envoy to NATO, died in Moscow in late 2022.

He had worked for the Russian tank manufacturer Uralvagonzavod. The company announced on December 25 that the former military officer had died “suddenly” in a Moscow hospital. In a brief statement, the company announced Maslov’s death, but did not disclose the cause of death.
