Source: Cowboys strengthen their run defense and sign Linval Joseph for one year

OXNARD, Calif. – The Dallas Cowboys have continued to restructure their defensive line, agreeing to a one-year deal with veteran defensive tackle Linval Joseph, a source told ESPN, confirming several reports.

The Cowboys have been in talks with Joseph throughout the offseason and were finally able to close a deal on Wednesday, the day of their final training camp in Oxnard. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones indicated on Tuesday that the club would provide additional support to the group.

Joseph, 35, will reteam with Mike Zimmer, who was his head coach for six seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. Joseph joined the Vikings as a free agent in 2014 after being drafted by the New York Giants. Joseph has 676 career tackles and is a two-time Pro Bowler.

Improving their run defense has been a major focus for the Cowboys. Last week, they acquired Jordan Phillips, a teammate of Joseph’s last year in Buffalo, in a trade with the Giants. They also signed pass rusher Carl Lawson to a one-year deal.

The Cowboys like the performance of their 2023 first-round pick, Mazi Smith, in camp after a disappointing rookie season, but they wanted to add more size and experience to the group.

While Smith and Joseph will assume the nose tackle position, Osa Odighizuwa and Phillips will man the 3-technique position, although they are flexible in their position.

Joseph is the fourth defender, along with Lawson, who already has connections to Zimmer or run game coordinator Paul Guenther.
