Columbus Crew and LAFC agree to MLS Cup return match in Leagues Cup final

LAFC and Columbus Crew secured their place in the Leagues Cup final on Wednesday night, agreeing to a rematch of the 2023 MLS Cup final.

The Crew defeated LAFC 2-1 in last year’s MLS championship game in Columbus, and both teams will battle for the title again on Sunday at the same stadium.

Diego Rossi scored his third brace in four games in Columbus’ 3-1 win over Philadelphia Union in the first semi-final.

Rossi scored goals in the 12th and 43rd minutes, setting up a goal by Union’s Dániel Gazdag in the 32nd minute. Cucho Hernández capitalized on his own rebound in the 53rd minute to give Columbus a two-goal lead.

The Crew opened the scoring when Rossi fired a diving header at the near post after Andre Blake parried a Hernandez shot.

Gazdag took advantage of a mistake to equalize, but the Crew responded just before halftime when Christian Ramírez played a pass to Rossi, who finished.

With goals three minutes apart towards the end of the first half, Mateusz Bogusz and Kei Kamara helped hosts LAFC to victory over visiting Colorado Rapids and thus the desired revenge.

In addition to the MLS Cup final result, the Crew defeated LAFC 5-1 on the road in the MLS regular season on July 13.

Bogusz scored in the 42nd minute with a well-placed shot from 19 yards into the bottom right corner. Kamara was given the lead in the 45th minute by Ryan Hollingshead. Dénis Bouanga scored in the 59th minute and Lewis O’Brien added another goal in the 75th minute to back up three saves by LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

LAFC and the Crew have secured spots in the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup.

Union will host Rapids on Sunday in a match for third place; the winner will receive a place in the Champions Cup.
