Police search for sex offender accused of approaching teen in Marshfield – NECN

A manhunt is underway for a Level 3 sex offender wanted for failing to register his new address at a home in Scituate, Massachusetts.

Police became aware of Edmund Lachance on Tuesday evening when a 17-year-old girl went jogging in nearby Marshfield and called 911.

She said a suspicious man stopped and offered her a ride.

“She then immediately turned around and ran in the opposite direction toward a friend’s house, with him following her for a short time,” said Marshfield police Officer Camden Bruno.

The teenager provided police with a description of the vehicle, which officers quickly found parked in front of a home in Scituate.

Investigators say he was evasive about the incident, but they did not have enough information at the time to make an arrest.

“We spoke to him,” Bruno said. “At that point, we did not have sufficient suspicion. An investigation had to be carried out to confirm that he had not registered.”

According to the Sex Offender Registry Board, Lachance was convicted of rape in 1991 and of rape and indecent assault on a person 14 years of age or older in 2001. His status as a Level 3 sex offender requires him to register his new address when he moves.

When the police returned to the house, the 53-year-old had disappeared.

He was last seen driving a black 2006 Lincoln Zephyr with the Massachusetts license plate 4NWY15.

“He does not pose an immediate threat to public safety, but he does have a history of predatory behavior,” Bruno said. “We want to find him.”

Neighbors on Hawthorne Street in Scituate, where Lachance had lived, said he had only moved in a few months ago and was renting a room from the landlord.
