According to the Loveland-Symmes Fire Department, a woman practicing manicure accidentally started a fire that left dozens of residents of a multi-story apartment building homeless overnight.

Flames broke out in the woman’s second-floor apartment at Carrington Crossings on Carrington Lane around midnight after she touched her fingernails with a blowtorch and something began to melt, according to Fire Chief Otto Huber.

She caught the overflowing water in a container and thought she had it under control, but the water got so hot that it caught fire and ignited. It ran up the wall of her condo, over the fire wall that separated her apartment from the others, and then into the attic, Huber said.

Early Wednesday, part of the second floor collapsed onto the first floor, leaving residents of a total of 24 apartments homeless, fire officials said.

No injuries were reported.

The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.

The fire department is still on site and is intensively examining the interior of the large residential complex.

An estimate of the damage is not yet available.

The fire department did not give an exact number of residents who became homeless.
