2024 DQ Pigskin Preview: Phelps Hornets

PHELPS, Ky. (WYMT) – Phelps enters the 2024 season after two wins, an improvement over 2022.

Now the Hornets want to make a name for themselves.

“I think a successful season would be a really good statement,” said head coach Randy Smith.

Many of Smith’s players are eager to give the program its first successful season since 1998.

“I just feel like this year we can finally put it all together and make it happen,” said sophomore Ethan Fields.

To bring more wins to the program, Phelps will rely on depth that was not present last season.

“Last year I had a lot of linemen and I had to take linemen and put them in the backfield just to be able to run things,” Smith said. “This year it’s the opposite. I have talented guys that came in from the basketball team and that really helped.”

The additional technical players will bring about a change in offensive play, which will include an aerial attack led by rookie quarterback Dylan Fields.

Fields will try to connect with many receivers, but no connection will be more special than the one with his brother Ethan.

“One of my coaches said he wished he could play with his brother,” Ethan Fields said. “It’s a blessing that I finally talked him into playing. It’s just fun to have him here for the next three years.”
