Century remains under boil water advisory; mayor hopes it will be lifted soon: NorthEscambia.com

A boil water advisory remains in effect throughout the city of Century as of Sunday morning, but Mayor Luis Gomez Jr. hopes the advisory will be lifted today or, at worst, Friday.

Much of the city of Century was without water for most of Sunday after a water main broke outside Bondurant Ace Hardware, 8511 North Century Boulevard, around 4:30 a.m. An automated system notified the mayor at 5:30 p.m. and CRS workers were on the job by 6 a.m. They worked until about 9:45 p.m. to complete the repairs.

Gomez said the city replaced several feet of a 6-inch pipe Wednesday night that broke as a result of an “act of God.”

“We have issued the boil water notice as a precautionary measure to ensure that no one gets sick or the water is contaminated in any way,” he said.

The city is awaiting the results of the bacteriological tests to be able to give the all-clear and lift the warning. In the meantime, the city recommends that all water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth or washing dishes be boiled for at least one minute or use bottled water.

“Use your best water before boiling water,” Gomez said.

As soon as the city informs NorthEsambia.com that the boil water notice has been lifted, we will update this article.

Due to the burst water pipe, the Whataburger restaurant on North Century Boulevard had to close on Sunday. It has since reopened.

Two Century City employees were injured during repair work, one seriously, when the hole they were working in collapsed, at least partially.
