Texas mother charged for allegedly forgetting to get her child out of hot car

A Texas mother is accused of causing the death of her toddler because she allegedly forgot that the child was left in a hot car.

Hilda Ann Adame, 33, was arrested and charged with child injury, aggravated assault and abandonment, endangering a child and threatening bodily harm, Corpus Christi police said in a news release Tuesday, Aug. 20.

The department added that Adame’s 22-month-old child, Harley Adame, was “left in a vehicle.” Adame went to work but forgot that she was supposed to take the toddler to the daycare on Kostoryz Road, KIII TV reports, citing a probable cause statement released by Corpus Christi Police Department officials. Adame works for Communities in Schools, a nonprofit that helps at-risk students, according to the source.

“Harley was asleep in the vehicle when Hilda arrived at Tom Browne’s, where she works, at 8 a.m. She forgot Harley was in the vehicle and continued on to school,” an arrest affidavit states, KRIS TV reports.

According to the affidavit, the toddler was left in Adame’s vehicle around 8 a.m. It was not until “approximately 1:29 p.m. that officers were dispatched to 4301 Schanen Blvd (Tom Browne Middle School),” the press release states.

Adame then reportedly went to the school with Harley to get help.

When CCPD and Corpus Christi Fire Department officers arrived on scene, they were led to the toddler and saw that the school nurse was already performing active CPR, the news release said.

The child was subsequently taken to Driscoll Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:53 p.m., KIII TV reported.

“CCFD transported the 22-month-old baby to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased,” the press release said.

“Heat index values are expected to reach up to 48°C today and up to 46°C tomorrow (Wednesday, August 21),” the warning said.

PEOPLE reached out to the Corpus Christi Police Department’s press office for comment but did not immediately receive a response.

It is not immediately known whether Adame is represented by a lawyer.
