Baltimore Orioles sign another defensive infielder from the Marlins

At the beginning of the season, many doubted that the Baltimore Orioles could repeat their success from last year, when they won 101 games to lead the American League.

Their performance earned them a bye into the ALDS playoff round, but they were promptly swept by the eventual champion Texas Rangers. Nevertheless, it was a great performance from a young team that will likely remain at the top of the Major League Baseball standings for a long time to come.

Earlier this season, the Orioles were able to silence many of their doubters by dominating their opponents’ pitching teams and shutting down lineups thanks to the strength of their own pitching teams.

But as the season progressed, Baltimore encountered some problems.

Due in large part to injuries to their starting pitchers, the Orioles are battling with the newly formed New York Yankees for supremacy in the AL East. For this reason, they cannot afford to lose games like the two against the New York Mets, which were won by walk-off home runs.

As management continues to try to improve this group, they have decided to add another infielder.

According to Darragh McDonald of MLB Trade Rumors, Baltimore has acquired Emmanuel Rivera from the Miami Marlins via waivers and designated for trade Terrin Vavra.

Rivera’s strength lies on defense, where he only managed a slash line of .239/.302/.354 in 313 games over his four-year career. He was responsible for 11 Defensive Runs Saved and 5 Outs Above Average at third base.

McDonald said this is a move to get normally reliable defender Ramon Urias back into an all-around role after he surprisingly struggled at third base this year.

This new addition also suggests that star talent Coby Mayo will likely remain in the minor leagues for the foreseeable future after having some problems at bat and in the field.
